FINE ART AND DESIGN
Painting is what I always wanted to do, but never did, until 1993 when I was nearly forty. During my first day of instruction with an early mentor I knew I was hooked. No turning back. I had found my passion! The road traveled since that day has been one of many blessings.
I have also encountered an abundance of challenges, obstacles and tears, just as on the old road, but this new direction finally gave them meaning and purpose.
I now consider myself a Romantic Aestheticist, seeking out beauty in this world and trying to capture my impressions of it in lasting works of art. My muses are the natural wonders of light, atmosphere and design as they combine in endless ways to reveal the inherent beauty in God’s creation.
Mostly, I paint directly from life, allowing me to compose a truthful impression of my experience that is both interpretive and realistic. My plein-aire landscapes and studio based still-life, figure and portrait works are all unified by this illusion of light and atmosphere. A friend and gallery owner in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, once wrote that “Greg’s ability to capture the poetry of light as it permeates space and illuminates his subjects is a hallmark of his work”. I liked that.
On my journey, I have learned that in a manner similar to counting our blessings, we truly nourish our souls when we actively seek the bounty and beauty in our lives. I paint with this in mind; to capture and share some of it for your enjoyment and nourishment. My mission is this: that during each appointment with my easel, canvas, paint and brushes, I will attempt to so invigorate the art spirit within me as to produce a thing of lasting beauty that, when framed and hung in a special place, will provide a future of joyful moments to those who pause to look upon it.
Although I believe that to a great extent all artists are self taught because the learning is in the doing and that an artist’s education is an endless road paved with canvas, I have been fortunate to have had wonderful instruction along the way from James Sulkowski and the late Frank Mason (Art Student’s League, NYC) and many inspiring and helpful critiques from my friend Mitch Billis.
I reside in the picturesque coastal Maine village of Boothbay Harbor with my wife, Beth, and daughter, Avery.
